who are killing u.s. troops in afghanistan. this is the story that's just coming in. and how much are house democrats willing to give to raise the debt limit? i'll ask the democratic party chairwoman about possible cut. she's walk into "the situation room" right now. congresswoman, stand by. >>> the clock is ticking towards a possible default of the nation's debt. the democratic party chair in the congress certainly has a lot op her plate right now with the debt crisis. everything else, as well as a very, very strong verbal showdown with a republican colleague of hers from florida. she's here in the situation room. congressman, thanks very much for coming in. let's talk about substance first and then you can talk about this riff you have with this congressman. the gang of six is out with a plan. the president warmly embracing it, even though there are cuts in medicare for the elderly included. is this something you can live with? >> well, i think the really good and big news out of that gang of six is prose sal is that there are finally republicans, particularly in the senate that

, mullah omar was dead. we're following the story. we go live to kabul, afghanistan. david, this one has got people wondering. what's going on? >> reporter: well, the news first broke by an afghan television station and then later in the day, cnn and other media received a message by an individual claiming to be a top taliban commander. that individual said that mullah omar had died of heart failure last week and a successor had already been named. the taliban, like you said, later came out and said they have been the victim of a hacking and their phones and emails have been tapped. in fact this message was phoney. cnn doesn't have any confirmation of the sort. we spoke with nato official and they have no operational knowledge on the ground. so the whereabouts of mullah omar are unknown. last believed to be in pakistan, where taliban militants have launched attacks across that border against troops down in the southern region. it's those southern and eastern regions of afghanistan that have experienced some of the highest levels of attacks. and this all comes at a very interesting time.

of president obama when it's clear that the wars in iraq and afghanistan added to the nation's debt? >> it did. he's the commander in chief he could have removed our troops at any point in time. let's taung about barack obama's position in washington, d.c. during the six years he's been in washington our accumulated national debt has increased by more than 50 percent. what is president obama's response been now and as a senator to increase spending even more, not to cut it. but to increase spending even more. two years as a freshman senator, the debt goes up $400 billion because of deficits. two years when he's in the majority of the united states senate, it goes up $1.8 trillion. now it's up $2.8 trillion while he's president. >> you're simplifying the issues on the plate of the nation at that point. we were looking at going -- reverting into a depression at that point. everyone the fed chairman -- >> i disagree. >> do you have a degree in economics? >> yes, ma'am, i do. highest honors. >> okay. so you disagree with the fed chairman, ben bernanke. you disagreed at the time paul vol ker and ot

have stuff going on in afghanistan. the president promised to bring home troops. not going all the way through with his promise. i would love to see these issues tackled as opposed toed to this. i think there's weightier stuff. >> pete? >> well, the truth is a lot of people think that this is an issue that the left or democrats or liberals care more about. but president obama hasn't made much movement on this. gary johnson and ron paul are totally four decriminalizing and to some extent legalizing marijuana. the fact is if two drugs give you pain relief and one will kill you possibly and be addictive and the other won't, which one do you want to take? >> your buzzer beater now. if the gang of six plan actually helps cobble together a debt deal, what impasse task should they tackle next? dana. >> well, cobbling together is the right word. i like the cap and balance plan. i think if we're serious about getting the debt under control, we need to pass it in the senate a and present it to the president for his signature. this plan is a sham, does nothing to reduce taxes. >> she went past te
